Geographies of Light
City and Town
Given the opportunity a city, or any large scale social organization, will evolve into and out of its organic expression of place. Some of the samples on this page and the download pdf files show how Geometry of Place studies or Gaiagraphy describe the social/ biological dynamics of city patterns.
Boston is a good example. The greater Boston Metro area is referred to as 'The Hub', with its encircling highways. This circular pattern reflects the geology of the encompassing Blue Hills. News to many, Boston metro area is on top of rock that was once part of the African tectonic plate. The same geology is found on the west coast of Morocco. Some might sight this as reason why Boston perceives itself as separate or different from the rest of the Massachusetts Commonwealth. Africans in Roxbury can feel at home here, on native African ground.
Boston has a hexagon pattern marked by its bays, river and hill locations. This six sided form is reinforced in civic pattern, and is an outgrowth of nature. Boston is a city that evolved from animal paths, to Indian paths, to cow paths, to the narrow winding streets of today. Boston was a city that grew from the nature that surrounds it.
The city has leys or alignments from outside The Hub that empower and focus the cities renewed center, City Hall Plaza and Government Center. This center point has a history that is all about communication. This is the site of the invention of the telephone, a council ground for ancient Native Americans, Boston's first livery stable and origin of Paul Revere's fate-filled ride.
The exact gaiagraphic center point of Boston is the sunken garden and (dry) fountain on the edge of the brick expanse of City Hall's Plaza. Boston also sits on the ring of a larger land geometry that expands in all directions to include the circumference of the North American tectonic plate. Placed thusly, Boston has an inherent dynamic influence upon the continent in total.
Gaiagraphic studies assist town planners and city officials in determining organizational structure and social dynamics. These studies help determine community focus points.
